Trick r’ Treat: Give Me Something Good to Eat

Contains spoilers!

By Jove, did they deliver! Released in 2007, Trick r’ Treat is dripping in Halloween lore; any bit of lore, it’s there. Directed by Michael Dougherty, the film is anthology, focusing on different characters and having their stories interwoven with each other.

The film, during the opening credits, shows a series of comic books that provides illustrations of what we’re about to watch. This is a clever idea, as each story can be seen as a different issue as part of an interconnected story. Likewise, the dialogue is realistic and witty, with it taking on second meanings as more is revealed.

The film’s central character is Sam (Quinn Lord), dressed in an orange jumpsuit and a burlap sack covering his face. He’s simultaneously adorable and unsettling in his mannerisms; as the film unfolds, we find ourselves asking, “What is this orange guy I keep seeing? What does he look like under the mask?” Though no character, including Sam himself, reveals his true intentions, we’re able to piece together what he is: a sort of patron saint of Halloween, there to ensure that the traditions of the holiday are followed to the letter.

It’s difficult to discuss this movie without giving too much away, but if you’re a fan of Halloween, I’d highly recommend checking this out. It’s become yearly viewing for my wife and I, and we’re sure to honor the holiday and what it stands for…lest Sam comes for us.
